
Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls to Army, 5-2

LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday, the Bucknell women's tennis team dropped its second Patriot League match of the season to Army, 5-2, at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts. Freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) defeated Niki Flach in the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-3. The Bison fall to 4-13 (1-2 PL) on the season, while the Black Knights improve to 12-10 (4-0 PL).
Army collected the first point of the afternoon winning two out of three doubles matches. Flach and Brooke Jones took down sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), 8-6, in the No. 1 spot. Varela and sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) defeated Sarah Giles-Madden and Jessica Shurtz, 8-6, in the No. 2 spot, while freshman Kirstyn Sotak and sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) lost to Paige Ford and Kristin Beelher in the No. 3 spot, 8-3.
Gamboa won her fifth straight No. 2 singles match against Jones, 5-0, (Ret.). Calcaterra fell to Giles-Madden in the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-2, while Globerman lost to Beehler in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 7-6(5). Junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) suffered a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Diana Alquero, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 5 spot, while Ford dropped Sotak, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.
Bucknell will play Lafayette on Sunday, Apr. 15, at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts beginning at 1 p.m. However, if inclement weather stops play, the match will be held at the West Branch Tennis Courts in Williamsport, Pa.
