LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) went 3-for-6 and scored three runs, but it wasn't enough to help the Bucknell baseball team to victories in either of its two games against Lafayette in Patriot League action at Depew Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bison (13-16, 5-5 PL) dropped game one by the score of 11-3 to the Leopards (19-12, 9-1 PL) and fell in game two, 13-3.
In the opening contest, Bucknell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Angelo drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and came home on an RBI single by senior Dustin Kapson (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman).
However, Lafayette pounced on Bison starter Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) in the top of the third to climb in front, 3-1. Chris Luick began the inning with a double down the left field line and Tom Hayes drove him in with a single up the middle. Hayes then crossed the plate on an RBI single by Mike Raible and James Conrad scored the third run on a wild pitch.
The Bison managed to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Angelo singled and Rubbo walked. The pair later came home as Kapson singled to left field, driving in Angelo, while an error committed on the play allowed Rubbo to score as well. Kapson finished game one a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
In their next turn at bat, the Leopards regained the lead with five runs on four hits and one error. The squad added one in the sixth and two in the seventh to bring the final score to 11-3.
Curry suffered the loss (3-5) for Bucknell after surrendering eight runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work. Ted Gjeldum tossed a complete game to pick up the victory (2-1) for Lafayette as he held the Bison to three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
After playing two scoreless innings in game two, the Leopards exploded for six runs in the third and five in the fourth to build an 11-0 advantage.
Bucknell broke up the shutout with a run in the fifth after Rubbo reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), but Lafayette promptly took the run back in the top of the sixth and tacked on one more in the seventh.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bison offense began to stir as the squad opened the inning with three straight hits by senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas), Angelo and an RBI double by Rubbo that plated Gryskevicz. Sophomore Zachary Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) drove in Angelo with a sacrifice fly for the second run of the inning, but Leopards' hurler Matt Kamine ended the contest with his 10th strikeout of the day.
Senior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) started and took the loss for the Orange and Blue (0-4) as he gave up eight runs, five earned, on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts over three innings. Kamine threw all nine innings for Lafayette to record the win (5-3) and scattered three runs on nine hits while walking one.
The squads are scheduled to return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 15, for the second doubleheader of their Patriot League series, slated for noon on Depew field.
