BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team picked up its first Patriot League victory of the season, dropping Lehigh, 5-2, on the Ulrich Varsity Courts Tuesday afternoon. The Bison improved to 4-12 (1-1 PL) on the season.
The Orange and Blue jumped on the scoreboard first after winning two out of three doubles matches. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) teamed with freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) to take down Gwen Dywer and Allie Schwartz, 8-3, while the duo of sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) stifled Julia Arthofer and Ruthie Furman, 8-2, in the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, the Bison tallied four straight-set victories over Lehigh (6-9, 0-1 PL). Gamboa tallied her fourth straight No. 2 singles victory against Schwartz, 6-2, 6-1, to put the Bucknell up 2-0. Varela posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dwyer in the No. 1 spot to improve to 5-3 on the season. Globerman dropped Cessa Murasco-Blank in the No. 4 spot to clinch the Bison victory over the Mountain Hawks.
Calcaterra lost a three-set match to Arthofer, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot. Freshman Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) defeated Furman, 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 5 spot, to gain Bucknell's fifth point of the match. Sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) fell in the No. 6 spot to Victoria Vityuk, 7-6, 6-3.
Bucknell will host Army on Saturday, Apr. 14, at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts beginning at 10 a.m.
