
Bucknell Women's Water Polo Defeats Maryland 9-7 in Overtime, Finishes Third at ECAC Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored four goals and Bucknell outscored Maryland 2-0 in overtime to defeat the Terrapins 9-7 on Sunday afternoon and claim third place in the ECAC Championship. It is the second consecutive year Bucknell, which was seeded second, has placed in the top three in the eight-team field after never before placing above fifth.
Bucknell held a two-goal advantage at halftime, but Maryland outscored the Bison 3-1 in the final period to even the score at 7-7. In the first three-minute overtime period Bucknell went up 9-7 and neither team found the back of the net in the final overtime frame.
Gins upped her team-leading goal total to 34, nearly halfway to her career high and program record of 70. She also added one assist and has a team-high 43 points on the campaign.
Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover), Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy), Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each tallied one goal apiece for the Bison. Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) registered a season-high three assists, while Rozas added a pair.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Lelan) made eight saves in net for Bucknell.
The Bison, who are now 8-7 on the season, were 5 of 12 in six-on-five situations, giving them 12 goals with a man-advantage in the last two games.
Bucknell opens league play next weekend in Princeton, N.J. The Bison play at Princeton on Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m. They then take on this same Maryland squad on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
