EMMITSBURG, Md. - After stellar starts by senior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) and junior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.), the Bucknell baseball team narrowly missed a sweep of Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon. The Bison (6-10) posted a 7-0 shutout in game one, but were edged by the Mountaineers (8-11) in game two after a late-inning rally.
In the first contest of the day, the Orange and Blue jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. In the top of the second, senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) started things off for the Bison with a single to right field. Junior Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) sacrificed Gryskevicz over to second and junior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) moved him to third with a single through the right side. Junior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) followed with an RBI single to right, driving in Gryskevicz, and his classmate, Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), plated Rubbo with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 2-0.
The following inning, sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) led off with a single and stole second. Then with one out, junior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) and Gryskevicz followed with back-to-back RBI doubles that scored Bucknell's third and fourth runs of the contest.
Freshman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) drove in the fifth run of the game with two away in the top of the fourth, bringing in senior Dustin Kapson (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman) with a single through the left side.
After opening the seventh inning with an infield single, Yoder scored the next run as Gryskevicz plated him for his second RBI of the contest. Later in the frame, Rubbo knocked in the final run for the Bison, driving in Buursma with an RBI groundout.
Curry worked 5.2 innings to pick up the win (2-3) for Bucknell as he scattered two hits, walked two and matched a career high with eight strikeouts. Buursma combined with Curry for the shutout, tossing 1.1 hitless innings of relief while fanning one batter. Bucky Kosyk started for The Mount and suffered the loss (1-2). He allowed five runs on ten hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
In game two, the Orange and Blue took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Yoder singled to right and later came home on an RBI single by Turban.
The Bison added two more in the top of the seventh as Grandizio and Buursma reached with singles and Turban drove in both runners with a single to left.
However, Bucknell was unable to hold off the Mountaineers in the eighth as Mount St. Mary's scored four times with two outs. Mike Gioioso and Drew Councelman both notched singles, Josh Vittek reached on an error that also allowed Gioioso to score and Councelman came in on an RBI single by Eric Smith to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ryan Murray then plated the tying and winning runs with a double to right.
Wilson pitched seven scoreless innings in his start, but did not record the decision. He held The Mount to two hits, walked three and struck out five. Bison senior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) relieved him and took the loss (0-3) after allowing four unearned runs on three hits with no walks and no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. Dustin Pease registered the victory (3-2) out of the bullpen for Mount St. Mary's as he gave up two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Yoder led Bucknell's offense in the doubleheader, going 5-for-9 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Gryskevicz went 4-for-8 with one run scored, two doubles and two RBI, while Turban was 3-for-7 with three RBI and Buursma and Grandizio both hit 3-for-8, scoring three and two runs, respectively.
