LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Player of the Week on Wednesday after her performance on the Bison's six-game West Coast trip over spring break. The team's leading scorer this season, Gins netted 10 goals and dished out six assists as Bucknell went 3-3 with all three losses to ranked foes. She is the first Bison to earn the award this season.
The second-leading goal scorer in Bucknell history with 167 scores in her three-year career, Gins posted a pair of three-goal games last week. She found the back of the net at least once in five of the six games, including twice against No. 5 UC Irvine. She now has a team-high 49 goals on the season, just 21 shy of equaling her own program record set last spring.
Gins also contributed on the offensive end by dishing out those six assists, including a pair during a five-point output in a 13-8 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. She now has 230 career points, which is tied for fifth at Bucknell, just five behind fourth-place Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), a current senior who has 38 goals and a team-best 18 assists this season.
A driver, Gins really made her mark last week by drawing ejections as she drew a team-high 18, highlighted by six in a thrilling overtime victory opposite Cal Baptist. Gins has drawn multiple ejections in 18 of 23 games this year and paces the team with a career-high 66. She is averaging 4.0 per game over the last 10 contests.
After a grueling early season schedule where the Bison played 23 games in 36 days, Gins and her teammates are idle until Friday, March 30, when they return to league play at Maryland.
