LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team held Marist without a goal for the first 21 minutes of the game and built a 5-0 lead in that span as it defeated the Red Foxes 8-3 Sunday afternoon in the final contest of the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison, who completed the weekend 4-0 to even their overall record at 6-6, were led on the offensive end by Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), who tallied two goals apiece.
Bucknell, which earlier in the day upended Iona 13-6, bounced back from a 7-6 loss to Marist eight days ago. In that contest the Bison held a 4-1 lead in the first half before losing their only game of the year to an unranked foe. On Sunday, Bucknell opened up a 4-0 halftime advantage, but was able to easily hold on for the victory.
The Bison were 4 of 9 in six-on-five opportunities, with three of their first five goals coming in those situations.
After Bucknell opened five-goal leads at 5-0 and 6-1, an energized Marist squad cut the lead to three with back-to-back goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes final goal in their mini-run came when a shot from Kristen Barnett that was wide of the goal deflected in off a Bison defender and past Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland). That was the closest Marist would draw as Rozas and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) found the back of the net less than a minute apart for the final 8-3 margin.
In addition to her one goal, Rowe posted a pair of assists to equal Jensen for team-high honors in points with three. Single goals from Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western), Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) helped make up for leading scorer Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) registering just one assist and being shut out of the goals column for just the second time all season.
Bynum, who did not play earlier in the day against Iona, made seven saves in net for Bucknell. She has now raised her season save percentage above 50.0 percent (50.6%). The senior co-captain also posted a team-high three steals.
The Bison will be back in action next weekend, March 3-4, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., for the ECAC Championship. They will likely be seeded second or third in the eight-team field.
