WEST POINT, N.Y. - A short jumper by Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) with 36 seconds remaining capped a 22-10 run that brought Bucknell to within three points, but a potential game-tying 3-pointer from Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) with 10 seconds remaining came up short as the Bison closed out the regular season with a 61-57 loss to Army Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The loss halted Bucknell's school record nine-game winning streak, although the Bison, who finished up the regular season with a 20-9 record, including 12-2 in Patriot League play, will still be the top seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament. Army, which completed its regular season 24-5 and 11-3 in Patriot League play, will be the second seed.
Bucknell, which trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half, used a 10-2 run to draw to within 44-35 with just over 11 minutes left. Army extended its advantage back out to 15 points at 50-35, but in a span of less than eight minutes the Bison outscored the Black Knights 22-10.
A pair of 3-pointers from Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) and Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and the short jumper from Brown, all within a 35-second span, cut the Bucknell deficit from 58-49 to 60-57.
Margaree King missed a pair of free throws after Brown's jumper, leading to a Bucknell possession with 34 seconds on the clock and a chance to tie. After a tough time inbounding the ball, the ball ended up in Foster's hands on the right wing and her first 3-point attempt of the year came up short.
Bucknell never led in the game as it opened 0-for-8 from the field, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range, and was outrebounded 10-4 before scoring its first points nearly five minutes into the contest. After Army scored five straight points to open a 13-6 advantage, the Bison never drew to within five points until the final minute.
The key to the game was Army's rebounding as it posted a 48-39 advantage over Bucknell. The Bison also yielded 20 offensive rebounds.
Foster and Champion led Bucknell in scoring with 14 points apiece, while Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) added 11. Foster also posted a seven rebounds, one shy of Champion's career high-tying eight, and blocked six shots.
For the first time in Patriot League play, Brown failed to reach double figures as she posted just seven points on 3 of 15 shooting. As a team the Bison were just 21 of 62 (33.9 percent).
Army was led by Cara Enright, who tallied a game-high 19 points off the bench as the Black Knights' four seniors started on Senior Day. Twelve of her points came after halftime. She also paced Army with eight rebounds.
Bucknell will face the No. 8 seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament first round. That matchup will be Colgate, which finished the regular season 4-10 in Patriot League play. The Bison swept the Raiders during the regular season.
