LEWISBURG, Pa. - Six Bucknell men's water polo players were awarded positions on the 2006 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team recently. Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach), Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) earned "Superior Achievement" for having grade-point averages between 3.41 and 3.70, while Lee Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), Dan Schultz (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) were recognized with "Excellent Achievement" for GPAs between 3.20 and 3.40.
A total of 164 student-athletes were honored by the ACWPC for posting GPAs of at least 3.20.
Four of the six Bison honored were sophomores, including both that received "Superior Achievement", while the other two were juniors.
Heiber started all 27 games he played in and totaled 24 goals to rank fifth on the squad. The sophomore also added three assists and topped the team with 33 ejections drawn.
Lampley, also a sophomore, appeared in 27 of 28 games after seeing action in just 11 contests as a rookie. He drew four starts and tallied 10 goals and five assists. He was third on the team in ejections drawn behind Heiber and Rechel with 22 and claimed the team's Most Improved Award.
Nelson was the final Bison to earn "Superior Achievement". In his sophomore campaign he saw action in six contests and dished out three assists while scoring one goal. His best game came against Mercyhurst when he netted one goal and one assist in a 17-5 victory.
After playing sparingly his first two years Anderson saw action in 27 games this past fall. He tallied seven goals and dished out 11 assists. The Palo Alto, Calif., native also registered 11 steals.
Schultz had a solid sophomore season as he ranked fourth on the team with 20 assists and scored nine goals. His 29 points were sixth on the team.
Rechel rounded out the list of Bucknell players recognized for their academic efforts. The winner of the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player Award following the season, the all-conference selection was one of four Bison to start every game last fall. He was second on the squad with 45 goals and paced the team with 35 assists. Rechel tallied career highs in every offensive category and finished the season with 163 career points, equaling Mark Masterson for most on the squad.
Rechel, who posted a career-high eight points during a 14-11 victory over Johns Hopkins in September, was second to Masterson with 38 steals this season. He also recorded 31 ejections drawn and served as Bucknell's top sprinter, winning 48 of 102.
Bucknell finished the season with a 15-13 record while playing a challenging schedule that featured 15 ranked foes. It was the second time in three years the Bison finished above .500.
