Bucknell Women's Water Polo Drops Both Games on First Day of Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite eight total goals from Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley), the Bucknell women's water polo team lost both its games on the first day of the Maryland Invitational Saturday. The Bison were upset by Marist 7-6 and fell to No. 13 Hartwick 16-9. Gins led the team in scoring in both games, netting three against the Red Foxes and five more opposite the Hawks.
Bucknell (1-5) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead on Marist in the first game of the day, but failed to score in the second half as the Red Foxes outscored the Bison 4-0 after halftime. Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) helped shoulder the offensive load with a pair of goals, although Bucknell was just 3-for-8 in 6-on-5 opportunities.
Gins also added three steals in the contest as Bucknell totaled 11, including a team-high by Laura Stalker (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall).
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) totaled 19 saves on the day, including 11 against the Red Foxes. It was her second double-figure performance of the young season.
The second half was again a struggle in the nightcap against nationally ranked Hartwick as Bucknell trailed just 9-7 at halftime, but was outscored 7-2 in the second half.
Gins netted five goals for the fifth time in her career and also added one assist against the Hawks. She moved into a tie with Paige Cull for fifth on Bucknell's career goals list with 132.
Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who made her season debut against Marist, scored her first goals of the season with a pair against the Hawks. She was second on the team in scoring as a freshman in 2006.
Bucknell continues play at the Maryland Invitational Sunday with two more games. The Bison, who have lost four of their five games to ranked opponents, will take on host Maryland at 9:15 a.m. and then wrap up the weekend at 2:45 p.m. against No. 16 Michigan.
