LEWISBURG, Pa. - A smothering Bucknell defense held Colgate scoreless for the first 14 minutes, 56 seconds and the Bison jumped out to a 27-0 lead and never looked back as it defeated Colgate 64-32 Saturday evening in women's basketball action at Sojka Pavilion. On Senior Day, Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) netted a season-high 17 points, equaled her season high with seven rebounds and tied her career high with six steals as she played her final regular season home contest.
Colgate was 0-for-16 from the floor and had 11 turnovers before a short jumper from Elise Bronzo finally put the Raiders on the board. By that time Bucknell had already sealed the outcome against the undermanned Colgate squad that had just seven players in uniform and exhausted all five of its timeouts in just over 13 minutes.
The win was a school-record eighth in a row for the Bison, who improved to 19-8 overall and a Patriot League-best 11-1. The 32 points Bucknell limited the Raiders to was the lowest figure for a Bison foe since a 53-30 win over Elmira on Feb. 3, 1980. It was also the seventh-lowest point total for an opponent in the 34-year history of the program. Colgate last recorded fewer than 32 points in the 1991-92 season opener against Dartmouth when it netted just 27.
Seawright and Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner), who came off the bench with senior Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) taking her place in the starting lineup, paced the Bison during that game-opening run. Sewright had a personal 8-0 run that helped Bucknell to a 12-0 advantage. Brown followed with her own 7-0 spurt to put the Bison up 23-0. Seawright and Brown, who finished with 14 points and five rebounds, combined to tally 17 of Bucknell's first 27 points.
Behind field goals from four different players, Colgate did outscore Bucknell 10-9 over the final five minutes of the first half to trail 36-10 at halftime. The Raiders were just 4 of 23 from the field, including 1 of 5 from 3-point range, in the game's first 20 minutes. The Bison connected on 16 of their 33 field goals and 3 of 5 from behind the arc.
With five points from Katie Garman and four from TaHara Williams, who paced Colgate with 10 points in the game, in the opening minutes of the second half, the Raiders were able to close to within 19 points (40-21). However, Colgate netted just four points in a 10-minute span and the Bison opened up a lead of better than 30 points.
The final 32-point margin equaled the largest of the game and was the largest victory of the season for Bucknell, which last won by more than 30 points in a 73-38 home victory over American last February.
With each player on the roster grabbing at least two rebounds, Bucknell outrebounded Colgate 47-33. Seawright and Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) paced the squad with seven boards apiece, while Brown, Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and Le'Le' LeSeur (Snellvielle, Ga./Wesleyan) each pulled down five.
Champion was one of the many Bison to have solid all-around games as she added eight points and seven assists to go along with her five boards. She was also 4 of 6 from the field and did not have a single turnover. Overall, Bucknell turned the ball over just eight times. Colgate's Williams had 10 turnovers alone as the Raiders committed 21 total miscues.
Led by Brown's 14 points, Bucknell's bench had a solid day with a season-high 27 points. Kristina Collymore (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) played a season-high 20 minutes and netted a season-high seven points on three layups and a foul shot. LeSeur equaled her career high with five points, while Ashton Sprouse (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) pulled down four rebounds.
In her final regular season home game Hollobaugh totaled two points, two rebounds and one steal in 11 minutes. The basket, a fast break layup with Gretchen Polinski in hot pursuit, was her first since suffering a knee injury last month.
The one negative in the contest for the Bison was their free throw shooting. They were just 4 of 14, although Colgate was not much better at 6 of 18.
With 19 wins in the regular season, Bucknell is one shy of equaling the 2000-01 squad for the most regular season victories in program history. The Bison have already tied the 2001-02 team for the most Patriot League wins, while they have won 11 games in a 12-game span for the first time. Additionally, Bucknell has clinched a share of the Patriot League regular season title with Army. With one victory in their final two games, or an Army loss in one of its final three contests, the Bison will win their second Patriot League title and earn the top seed in next month's Patriot League Tournament.
Bucknell has two games remaining in the regular season as it hits the road Tuesday night for a contest at Lehigh. Tip-off for the game in Bethlehem, Pa., is 7 p.m. The Bison downed Lehigh 64-37 at Sojka Pavilion late last month.
