SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Despite leading 2-1 after the first quarter, the Bucknell women's water polo team lost to No. 12 Santa Clara 13-2 behind 12 unanswered goals from the Broncos on the first day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Bison also lost their first game of the day to No. 6 San Diego State, marking the first time since 2003 they have opened the campaign 0-2.
Freshman Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho), who tallied her first career goal earlier in the day against the Aztecs, and Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) netted the goals for Bucknell. Jensen also added an assist.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made nine saves in goal for Bucknell, giving her 21 on the day as she played all but the final four minutes against Santa Clara (5-2). Freshman Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) relieved Bynum and made one save and did not allow a goal over the final four minutes of play.
Despite scoring just two goals, Bucknell was able to fire a season-high 21 shots.
The Bison will continue play at the Triton Invitational Sunday with two more games.
