Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Play At ITA Regionals

Norfolk, Va. - Bucknell women's tennis opened the ITA East Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday with sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and the Bison pair of Varela and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) playing in the first round of singles and first two rounds of doubles, respectively.

Varela and Lucido defeated Walaa Elsir and Alexis McCoy of Morgan State in the first round, 8-2, and went on to upset the sixth-seeded pair in the second round. The Bison duo topped Elizabeth Googe and Susan Sullivan of Cornell, 8-6, to advance to the third round and bring the pair's season record to 10-1. Varela and Lucido will face 11th-seeded Michal Amir and Julia Huschke of Maryland on Sunday morning.
Varela played Sarah Lederhandler of Yale in the first round of singles and fell, 6-1, 6-1, bringing her singles record to 1-3 on the season.
The Bison are now set to continue the ITA Regionals on Saturday.
