Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls To Penn State In Season Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team opened the 2008 season on the road at Penn State Tuesday evening, falling to the Nittany Lions, 7-0, to bring the Bison to 0-1 on the season.
In No. 1 doubles, freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) fell to Jenny Shular and Katelyn BeVard of Penn State, 8-4. The No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) were defeated by Sarah Lotto and Lauren McCarthy of Penn State, 8-1. In round three of doubles play, freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) faced the Nittany Lion pair of Lauren Holzberg and Dorothy Dohanics, falling 8-2.
In singles, Varela played at the No. 1 position, dropping, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to BeVard. Gamboa played in round two, falling, 6-2, 6-0, to Shular and Lucido played in round three, falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to Lotto. At the No. 4 position, Calcaterra was defeated by Holzberg, 6-1, 6-1, and at the No. 5 position, Dwojewski was defeated by McCarthy, 6-2, 6-4. Dohanics topped Baffa at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bison will return to action this weekend, Jan. 25 - 27, in Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational.
