LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite winning game one and overcoming a 10-point deficit to take the lead in game four, the Bucknell volleyball team came up short against Army on Saturday evening, falling by the score of 3-1 to the Black Knights, who are now 17-4 on the season, 5-2 in the Patriot League. Following the setback, the Bison are 9-12 on the year, with a record of 3-4 in league play.
In the opener, Bucknell used a 6-0 stretch to build a 13-5 advantage. Even though Army managed to close the gap to two on several occasions, the Bison held on for a 30-27 victory.
Then in game two, with the Orange and Blue ahead 11-10, the Black Knights strung together a 10-3 run to pull in front, 20-14, and went on to take the frame, 30-24, tying the match score at one.
After trailing from the opening point in game three, Bucknell battled back to eventually go on top, 19-18. Army tallied the next four points to regain its advantage, but the Bison later rallied to tie the score at 29. However, Army managed to snag the victory with a kill by Lauren Teal and a Bison attack error for the final two points in the 31-29 decision.
Bucknell responded from the game three loss by opening the fourth with a 4-0 lead. Army rebounded, evening the score at six, and proceeded to go on a 14-4 run to take what appeared to be a comfortable lead at 20-10. However, the Bison fired back by outscoring the Black Knights 16-5 to climb in front, 26-25. The teams then traded point-for-point until a Bucknell attack error and two kills by Rachael Breinling sealed the 31-29 victory for Army.
Senior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) led the Bison in kills with 15 and completed her double-double with 16 digs. Freshman Kelsey Lisle (Marriottsville, Md./Seton Keough) followed with 13 kills and posted a double-double, as well, with 11 digs. Freshman Heidi Kamp (Springfield, Ore./Henry D. Sheldon) contributed 11 kills along with five blocks (2-3). Senior Tessa Mendez (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy) also had five blocks (1-4), while Henderson and Lisle added three apiece. For the Black Knights, Breinling paced the squad with 21 kills and hit .400 with seven blocks. Jamie Clark and Teal chipped in with totals of 16 and 10 kills apiece, Teal adding seven blocks. Maureen Bannon and Karyn Powell dished 26 and 25 assists, respectively, Shara Hoffman finished with 17 digs and Elizabeth Lazzari had 16 digs.
