LEWISBURG, Pa. - Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) equaled her career high with 22 points and Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) added a season-high 19 points as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Navy 67-47 Saturday afternoon in its Patriot League opener inside Sojka Pavilion. It was the largest win of the year for the Bison, who also opened league play with a victory against the Mids last January.
Brown, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 2, and Schober combined to make 15 of their 27 field goals, including 6 of 13 from 3-point range as their 41 combined points were the most for a pair of Bucknell (9-7, 1-0 Patriot League) teammates since Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) and Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) combined for 42 points in an opening-night win against Hampton.
The Bison, who turned the ball over a season-low eight times, jumped out to three 10-point leads in the up-tempo first half, but then Navy's Carly Meyer got hot and narrowed the deficit. She tallied 18 first-half points and turned a 21-11 Bucknell lead into a tie game as she went on a personal 10-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers, a long jumper and two free throws.
Bucknell finally ended its six-minute scoreless drought when Brown found Schober ahead of the pack for a three-point play. A step-back jumper by Brown and a pair of Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) free throws completed a 7-0 run.
Meyer brought the Mids, who never led in the contest, to within one when she made three consecutive free throws after being fouled by Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) while shooting a 3-pointer from the right wing. A 3-pointer by Hollobaugh and a free throw from Champion rounded out the first-half scoring and sent the Bison into halftime with a 34-29 cushion.
In the second half Bucknell shut down Meyer, holding her without a point and limiting her to just four field goal attempts until the final minutes of play. Margaret Knap did score nine of her 14 points in the second half, but Bucknell used a 26-8 run that spanned nearly 10 minutes to seal the game. Consecutive 3-pointers by Brown, Schober and Champion capped the run and put the Bison up 65-45 with five minutes to play.
Bucknell converted a season-high nine 3-point field goals with Brown knocking down four, the same number she hit against Navy in their meeting last January.
Despite scoring a season-low two points, Foster led the team in rebounding with seven as the Bison, who were outrebounded a combined 88-54 in their last two outings, won the battle of the boards 38-36. During the game-deciding 26-8 run, Bucknell held a 13-2 edge in rebounding. Foster also added three blocks to increase her season total to 64, which is third on the school's single-season list. She holds the top three spots on that ledger.
With seven points Hollobaugh moved into sixth place on Bucknell's career scoring list with 1,345 points as she passed Ann Kirwin. She also became the 10th Bison in history to record 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds as her five boards gave her 503 in her stellar career.
Navy (5-9, 0-1 PL) shot just 33.3 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 18 times. The Mids were led by 18 points from Meyer and the 14 from Knap. No other player tallied more than six as they fell to 2-6 all-time against Bucknell in Patriot League openers.
The Bison ended a two-game losing streak with the win and improved to 11-6 all-time in Patriot League openers. Bucknell defeated Navy 88-51 in Annapolis, Md., to open conference play last January.
Bucknell wraps up its four-game homestand Wednesday, Jan. 10, against American. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
