HAMILTON, N.Y. - A 12-0 run near the end of the first half and a 15-0 spurt at the beginning of the second helped the Bucknell women's basketball team overcome a sluggish start and defeat Colgate 74-48 Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The Bison, who have won four of their last five games, were led by 16 points apiece from Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) and Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican). Melanie Cargle led the Raiders with 21 points, including 16 in the second half.
Bucknell (12-8, 4-1 Patriot League) trailed 15-10 after its slow start and didn't take the lead for good until the beginning of its 12-0 run, which ended with the score 32-22 and spanned just 2:30. Cargle scored on a fast break in the final seconds to cut the Bison halftime advantage to 32-24.
Both teams started off blazing hot in the second half as they combined for 17 points in the first three minutes of play. Colgate (2-18, 1-4 PL) narrowed the score to two points, but three consecutive 3-pointers from Schober and Seawright helped Bucknell begin its second-half run and stretch its lead to 54-34. It took just three minutes for the lead to go from five points to 20.
The Bison then held on over the final 14 minutes of play as the 26-point final margin equaled the largest of the game and was their largest win since defeating American by 35 points last February.
Cargle provided Colgate's only offense in the second half as Bucknell's lead ballooned. She tallied 16 of her 21 points after halftime and the rest of the team contributed just eight of the Raiders' 24 second-half points.
Bucknell blistered the nets at 54.2 percent in the second half and forced 24 turnovers, including 15 in the first half, to key the victory. In addition to her 16 points, Seawright led the team with three steals and pulled down six rebounds.
Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) tallied 15 points, registered a career-high seven assists and equaled her season high with six rebounds, all in the first half. She knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, marking the fourth time in five games she has done that. Brown also became the fourth current Bison, and 39th overall, to eclipse 500 career points. She joined teammates Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain), Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) in that exclusive group.
Foster rounded out the quartet of Bucknell players in double figures as she tallied eight of her 10 points in the second half. She pulled down four rebounds. Le' Le' LeSeur (Snellville, Ga./Wesleyan) led Bucknell with a career high-tying seven rebounds as the Bison won the rebounding battle 39-36.
Bucknell's 74 points was its third-most of the season as it won for the 10th time in 11 games when tallying at least 60 points.
The Bison, who defeated Colgate for the fourth time in five meetings, will return home Wednesday, Jan. 24, to host Lehigh at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
