PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) broke into the program's record book with his 12th dual-meet win of the season, but the Bucknell wrestling team fell to Brown by the score of 22-12 in EIWA action on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Following the setback, the Bison are now 7-7, 2-2 EIWA, while the Bears picked up their first win of the season and sit at 1-4 (1-0 EIWA).
Rendos logged one of four victories for Bucknell on the day, defeating Bran Crudden, 4-0, at 165. The win brought Rendos' dual-meet record to 12-2 on the year, which ranks among the top-30 all-time in Bison history. He is currently four away from reaching the program mark of 16 victories that has previously been achieved by Tom Scotton (16-0, 1974-75), Steve Greenly (16-1, 1978-79) and Bob Greenly (16-2, 1978-79).
Brown led Saturday's match from the outset after Greg Einfrank downed Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) at 125, 9-3.
David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Area) tied the score briefly for the Bison at 3-3, as the 133-pounder picked up a 9-5 decision over Jeff Schell. However, the Bears climbed to a 13-3 advantage with wins in the following three bouts.
Rendos' result closed the deficit to seven for the Orange and Blue and Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) followed up by defeating Chris Musser, 4-0, in the 174-pound matchup, which brought the Bison within reach at 13-9.
But that would be as close as Bucknell would come, even though the team result was still up for grabs heading into the heavyweight bout after Eric Lapotsky (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel Area) blanked Larry Otsuka, 7-0, at 197.
Then, with a 16-12 advantage heading into the final matchup, Levon Mock sealed the win for the Bears by pinning George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) in two minutes, eight seconds.
Bucknell continues its weekend road trip with a meet at Boston University tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 14, at 4 p.m., in Boston, Mass.
