LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday Sept. 9, the Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams will begin their 2006 fall campaigns in the Bloomsburg Invitational. The invitational was regularly scheduled at Bloomsburg University, but due to construction, the event has been moved to Bucknell.
On the men's side, the squad will be led by junior captain Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y/Rye County Day Upper School). Reibeisen copped First team All-Patriot League honors this past spring, marking the first time since 1999 that a men's player for the Bison has been awarded this honor. Reibeisen was the No. 1 starter last season and went 8-11 record in both the dual singles and doubles matches while being paired with the schools all-time wins record holder Asher Salam. He also went 3-3 in Patriot League in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) earned a starting spot in the lineup at the fifth spot a year ago. He recorded a 9-10 in dual single matches as well as an overall 10-9 record in dual doubles last season. In the league, Sandburg also recorded 3-3 records in dual singles and doubles.
Last year's women's Patriot League runner-ups will be anchored by sophomore captain Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) who pulled out a late season surge last year in the Patriot League posting a 3-2 mark. Globerman went 9-11 overall in dual singles while in the No. 4 spot of the lineup. In dual doubles, she notched a 6-4 record and a 3-1 PL record with teammate JoAnne Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park). Grossman went 6-14 in dual singles matches but is expected to make a big impact on the staring lineup this fall.
Both men's and women's tennis teams have added freshmen who are expected to make an impact in 2006-07 season. For the men, Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) was ranked 10th in the New England polls and 231 in the national rankings. On the women's side, Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/ Alliance Academy) was ranked No. 1 in Ecuador, No. 4 in South America and 298 in the ITF rankings. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Twp.) was ranked 155 in the national polls and 41 in the Mid-West rankings. Megan Lee (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), Eva Lipiec (Rockaway, N.Y./Polytech Prep) Kirstyn Sotak (Beechwood, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and Renee Weissand (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) will all provide depth in the starting lineup as well.
