LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) picked up his second award of the week Tuesday when he was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division, East Region Co-Player of the Week. The senior captain of the Bucknell men's water polo team shared honors with George Washington's John Hornberger after scoring a total of 12 goals in four games last weekend. On Monday, Masterson copped Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week plaudits.
Masterson was very consistent as he led Bucknell to a 3-1 record at the season-opening Navy Open. The driver netted three goals in each game over the weekend. He also notched two assists and leads the squad in points with 14, five ahead of Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), who stands second with nine.
Masterson also recorded seven steals and drew five ejections over the weekend. Five of those steals came during a tight 9-8 win over Santa Clara.
A starter in all 36 games since transferring to Bucknell from UC Irvine prior to the 2005 campaign, Masterson led the team in scoring with 48 goals last year, a figure he is well on his way to surpassing. He also added 22 assists last year for a team-high total of 70 points.
Thanks to Masterson's strong performance, Bucknell, which is ranked 17th nationally and is sure to remain in the poll this week, was able to defeat Queens, No. 18 Santa Clara and MIT in Annapolis, Md. The lone Bison loss came to No. 1 California. Bucknell's 3-1 start to the season is its best since 2000.
Masterson and the rest of the Bison will be back in action this weekend when it hosts the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.
