Greetings to everyone and thanks for checking in with our inaugural Coach's Corner for Bucknell Women's Rowing. We hope you will check this site regularly to keep up to date with how we are progressing and even to ask a question or two.
Many folks have asked me how the team is looking this fall, especially after winning the Patriot League Championship last year. My answer is "good." I have noticed that the team's confidence and ambition have grown as a result of last year's finish. However, it is clear that the women have turned the page and the 2006-07 squad is looking to make its own way, create its own legacy and enjoy and experience this year as its own entity.
Newcomers to the team include a group of about 15 high school rowers and coxswains. Ten have been working with the varsity squad while five have been rowing with the larger novice group. Coaching with the novice group is our most recent addition to the coaching staff. Coach Julie Quoss hails from the University of Wisconsin and she is hard at work developing five freshman eights for the Head of the Schuylkill.
The fall sculling initiative is in its second year and we can already see how much our slow beginnings from last fall are paying off. While last year's program was geared towards learning the basics, this year's group has actually been able to polish those skills and get in a good workout. Our weeks culminate in intrasquad races on Saturdays. We have also incorporated a week of sweep, in fours, for every two weeks of sculling. The expectation is that the alternation of skill sets and challenges will push the women to develop and adapt as well as keeps things fresh and exciting.
The Head of the Schuylkill, on Oct. 28, is our main competition for the entire team. As many of you know, this follows our philosophy of using the fall semester for general preparation as well as providing extra time for the team's academic pursuits and community activities. This year, however, we are trying something new in that we have carefully selected a group of five women to race at the Head of the Charles as well as two other preparatory races, the first of which was this past Sunday in Rochester, N.Y.
Again, we hope you will check back regularly to see how things are going with Bucknell Women's Rowing. Please check our race schedule as well. We'd love to see you in Rochester, Philadelphia, or Boston this fall.
