LEWISBURG, Pa. - Ten Bucknell women's water polo players were named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Academic Team for achieving cumulative grade-point averages of at least 3.20. Six of those student-athletes also landed positions on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team. Additionally, the Bison were honored by both organizations for their 3.18 team grade-point average.
Laura Stalker (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall), Kat Eckert (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) and Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) were cited by both organizations, while Sadie Abuhoff (Cranbury, N.J./The Lawrenceville School), Kim Johnson (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), Jennifer Kerwin (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Amanda Barto (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) copped accolades from only the CWPA.
Both organizations recognize student-athletes in three different categories based on GPA. Student-athletes with GPAs from 3.71-4.0 earn "Outstanding Achievement", while GPAs from 3.41-3.70 earn "Superior Achievement". With a GPA between 3.20 and 3.40, a student-athlete is recognized with "Excellent Achievement".
With a sparkling 3.75 GPA, Stalker, a sophomore, was the lone Bison to earn "Outstanding Achievement". Recognized by both the CWPA and ACWPC in 2005 as well, Stalker was one of just three Bucknell players to see action in every game last year. She scored nine goals and compiled 10 assists for a career-high 19 points. A veteran of eight career starts, Stalker was strong defensively with a career-high 29 steals to rank fifth on the team despite coming off the bench in the majority of contests.
Eckert, a classmate of Stalker's, was one of four Bison to fall in the "Superior Achievement" category. It is the second consecutive year she has been honored for her academic performance. A driver, Eckert scored seven goals and dished out a career-high 10 assists last year in 31 games. She drew three starts to boost her career total to seven. Additionally, she totaled eight steals and drew six ejections.
Rowe was the only Bucknell freshman to be honored by both organizations. The conference and team Rookie of the Year, Rowe made an immediate impact by scoring 42 goals in her first 14 games last season. Some lingering injuries slowed her pace, but Rowe still finished second on the team with 58 goals and also assisted on 21 others for 79 points. She also ranked second on the team in ejections drawn (42), second in sprints (34) and third in steals (34). Rowe scored a career-high six goals against Wagner in February, falling one shy of equaling Meg Blitzer's program record.
The lone senior on the team, Nogic also earned "Superior Achievement" accolades as she was honored for the third consecutive season by the CWPA and for the second straight year by the ACWPC. The recipient of the team's Class of '99 Award, Nogic started all 29 games she saw action in and ranked tied for fourth on the squad with a career-high 38 points. A veteran of 91 career games, Nogic had made just 15 starts and registered just 33 points entering the 2006 campaign. She netted a career-high 17 goals and dished out a personal-best 21 assists last season. Additionally, Nogic was second on the team with 37 steals, also a career high.
Trimis, a junior, rounded out the quartet of players in the "Superior Achievement" category as she was cited for the second consecutive year. One of three Bison to appear in all 32 games last year, Trimis drew a career-high 24 starts. A veteran of 99 career contests, Trimis registered 15 goals and seven assists last spring to up her career totals to 51 goals and 22 assists. Trimis finished the campaign third on the squad with 32 ejections drawn.
Sullivan rounded out the list of players honored by both organizations by copping "Excellent Achievement" accolades. A team co-captain with Nogic last year, Sullivan tied her fellow captain for fourth on the team with a career-high 38 points. In fact, Sullivan totaled just 39 points her first two seasons in Orange and Blue. She netted 20 goals and dished out 18 assists last year. Sullivan's best role is as a defender, where she recorded a team-high 40 steals to boost her career total to 91.
The four players who copped honors from only the CWPA all fell in the "Excellent Achievement" category. Barto saw the most playing time of the quartet, appearing in 20 games and scoring five goals while dishing out six assists. Abuhoff registered two goals in 14 games, while Johnson saw action in six contests and Kerwin two.
As a team, Bucknell's 3.18 GPA ranked 16th among all teams, according to the AWPCA.
The Bison finished the 2006 season with a 23-9 record to equal the 2005 squad for the most wins in program history.
