Three Bucknell Track and Field Athletes Named to Academic All-District Teams

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three members of the Bucknell track and field squads were named to the ESPN the Magazine Track and Field All-District II first and second teams the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Senior Dan Frake (Northport, N.Y./Nortport) was selected to the men's first team while junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) and classmate Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) earned spots on the women's second team.
Frake, by virtue of his first team selection, will advance to the national ballot for the chance to become an Academic All-American. During the indoor season, Frake took fourth in the weight throw at the Patriot League Championship meet with a throw of 53-11.75, good for seventh all-time in program history, and finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 50-2, which ranks sixth in the school record books.
In outdoor competition, he was an NCAA East Regional qualifier in the hammer, an event he won at the league championships to earn All-League first team honors. At the IC4A Championships, Frake placed third with the second-best throw in school history (200-2) that ranked as high as 39th nationally. Frake also etched his way into the program record books in the shot put, putting 52-2.75, which is second all-time. He set the mark at the league meet, taking fourth in the event while turning in a seventh-place finish in the discus at the championships as well.
As an accounting and economics major, Frake posted a 3.51 cumulative GPA. He served as team captain and was a Dean's List student and a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member during his career with the Bison.
Following an outstanding indoor season, Buczko was named the Patriot League Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year. She earned first team All-League honors after breaking a league championship record by clearing a height of 12-10 in the pole vault, helping the Bucknell women capture the Patriot League indoor title. Buzcko ranked 23rd nationally in the event with her season-best mark of 13-3.5, which was an NCAA provisional qualifier. At the ECAC Indoor Championships, she finished third in the pole vault, with a height of 12-7.5. She also set a new top-10 time in the 55-meter hurdles during the indoor season, as her time of 8.32 seconds ranks third in Bison history.
Buczko contributed to a Bucknell outdoor Patriot League title by setting a championship meet record in the pole vault (12-11.5) and ranked 30th nationally in the event with a NCAA Eastern Regional qualifying mark of 13-1.5. At the ECAC Championships, she placed second by clearing a height of 12-9.5. In the 100-meter hurdles, Buczko set a new No. 5 time in the program record books, running a season-best time of 14.57.
A Dean's List student and a Patriot League Academic Roll member, Buczko carries a cumulative GPA of 3.63 as a civil engineering major. During the 2006 Spring semester, she managed a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
At the 2005-06 Patriot League Indoor Championships, Trentacoste took third in the 400-meter (58.74), fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.29) and was a part of the winning 4x400 relay squad (3:57.06) to earn first team All-League honors. Her season best in the 55-meter hurdles, 8.26 seconds, was an ECAC qualifier and marked the second-best time in school history. She also set new Bucknell top-10 marks in the 60-meter hurdles, 8.97 which ranks second, and 58.57 in the 400, which ranks eighth.
During the outdoor season, Trentacoste collected first team All-League honors and was named the Patriot League Female Athlete of the Meet at the league championships as she won the 400 meter in 56.71, which ranks third in school history, set a Bucknell record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.23 to take second in the meet and finished third in the 400-meter hurdles, with the second-best time in the Bison record books (1:01.17). She qualified for the ECAC Championships in all three events and was an NCAA Eastern Regional qualifier in the 400.
A Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Trentacoste has a cumulative GPA of 3.51 as a mathematics major.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, an athlete must be have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
