WASHINGTON, D.C./COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Behind 25 total saves from goalie Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) the Bucknell women's water polo team concluded its regular season with a road sweep of league opponents George Washington and Maryland Saturday afternoon. The Bison downed the Colonials 9-7 and the Terrapins 7-1 to wrap up the regular season with a 21-6 record, including 4-2 in CWPA Southern Division league play.
With the two victories Saturday, Bucknell clinched the second seed in the Southern Championships, held at Princeton on April 22. The Bison will face third-seeded Maryland in the 11:30 a.m. game. Top-seeded Princeton will square off with George Washington in the first game. The two winners and two losing teams will meet later in the evening.
Bucknell, which is two wins shy of equaling the program record for most wins in a season set last year, moved to 4-0 against the Terps this season and 3-0 against the Colonials. The Bison swept the same two teams last Saturday during the first day of the ECAC Championship.
Bynum led a strong Bucknell defense in each game. She equaled her career high with 14 saves against George Washington in the opener and followed with 11 opposite Maryland to bring her season total to 191 and her career total to 707. Bynum also netted her first career goal with a length-of-the-pool toss at the end of the third quarter against the Colonials that gave the Bison a 9-3 advantage.
Bucknell jumped out to a hearty 6-2 lead against George Washington, and led 9-3 at the end of three quarters, before the Colonials jumped back in the game with four unanswered tallies in the fourth period.
Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy) tallied three goals apiece, while Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) added two to round out the scoring. Kingerski's goal total is a new career high.
In the second game the Bison recorded 12 steals with Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) leading the way with three. The Bucknell defense allowed Maryland one first-quarter goal, but then shut the Terrapins out from that point on.
Jensen led the Bison with three goals and one assist against Maryland, while four other players tallied one apiece. Jensen led the team with five goals and two assists on the day.
Against Maryland, Bucknell was 3-for-5 in six-on-five opportunities. It was 3-for-7 against George Washington.
The Bison are idle next week before starting their postseason run at the Southern Championships in two weeks against Maryland.
