LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison women's tennis team fell to Pittsburgh, in a 5-2 battle that proved to be much closer than the final score shows, on Saturday afternoon on the Bucknell tennis courts in Lewisburg, Pa. With the last Patriot League contests approaching, the Orange and Blue are showing signs of becoming ready to play and eager to win in the upcoming league tournament.
Senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) was victorious in the No. 2 spot, while freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) captured a win in the No. 3. Mills dominated over Leah Friedman 6-2, 6-4, while Gamboa, after a close 7-5 win in the first set, quickly downed Annie Davis, 6-1 in the second set.
Freshman Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstwon) continued to play well as she took her match into three sets at the No. 4 spot. She lost the first set 6-4, came back to win the second 7-6 (5), but could not seal the win as she fell in the final set 10-6. In one of her best performances all season, senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magurder) also played a very competitive match in the No. 1 spot, but fell on the short end of 6-3, 6-4 score.
In doubles play, Bucknell picked up one win as the duo of Brown and Gamboa defeated Kristy Borza and Leah Friedman, 8-5, in the No. 1 spot.
"The coaching staff is extremely pleased with the way the girls played this weekend, given the tough conditions they had to face due to the weather," said assistant coach Steve Monge. "Everyone seems to be stepping up as we head into our final conference matches next week. Our doubles play is getting better; we have come along way in the last few weeks."
Bucknell will return to action on Tuesday, while hosting Villanova at 3 p.m., before battling league foes in Lehigh on Thursday (3 p.m.) and Colgate on Saturday (10 a.m.) on the home front. With two conference wins, the Orange and Blue would enter Patriot League Tournament play with a league record of 4-1.
