PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) scored three of her team-high four goals in a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter to help the Bucknell women's water polo team force overtime, but the Bison came up short, falling to Princeton 9-8 in the third-place game at the Eastern Championship Sunday afternoon. Bucknell's fourth-place showing at the championship is the best in program history.
Finding itself trailing 6-4 at the end of the third quarter, the Bison turned to Trimis who netted three goals in a row to give Bucknell a 7-6 lead, its first since leading 1-0. Princeton retook the lead with back-to-back goals by Elyse Colgan and Megan Donahue, but Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) evened the score up at 8-8 with an extra-man goal with 48 seconds left in regulation.
Neither team was able to register a goal in the first three-minute overtime period, but following a lengthy delay to repair the shot clock, Princeton scored on its first possession of the second overtime stanza when Courtney Mee tallied her second goal of the contest.
Bucknell, which played much of the game without Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), was unable to score in overtime. The Bison did have possession of the ball in the final minute with a chance to tie, but J.J. Ryu recorded a steal to ice the game for the Tigers.
Gins tallied a pair of goals, while Laura Stalker (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary) and Rowe added one apiece. Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) dished out three assists to lead the team. Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had a team-high three steals.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) stopped five shots in net for the Bison as she finished the season with 226.
The Bison lost all four games to Princeton this season by a combined six goals, including three by just one goal.
Bucknell wrapped up its 2006 campaign with a 23-9 record to tie the 2005 squad for the most wins in program history.
