WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite fighting a tough battle, the Bucknell women's tennis team fell to Army, 4-0, in the Patriot League Tournament championship match on Sunday afternoon at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. The runner-up finish to the Black Knights repeats last season's result.
Even though the Orange and Blue fell, the effort was outstanding, especially in doubles play as the pair of Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Colonel Zadok Magruder) and Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) defeated Brooke Jones and Megan Noble in the No. 1 spot, 8-4, in what could probably be considered the pair's best outing of the season.
The duo of Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Caitlin Baffa (Dix, Hills NY/Half Hollow Hills High School East) fell in the No. 2 spot, 8-6, while Ashley Globerman and JoAnna Grossman fell 8-1 in the No. 3.
In singles play, Gamboa finished first, in the No. 3 spot, but fell on the short end of a 6-2, 6-2 score to Sarah Giles-Madden, while Grossman finished second, in the No. 6, but came up short, 6-1, 6-2, to Diana Alquero.
The final completed singles match of the day was Baffa's, at the No. 5, falling to Jessica Shurtz, 6-1, 6-1.
Brown played in the No. 1 spot and was up on Megan Noble, 7-6, 2-1, when the match was called to retire.
Mills and Globerman, in the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, also competed in unfinished matches.
"The scores really don't indicate how well we played," said head coach Rebecca Helt. "We really came out strong, much better than last year against Army. We played some tough matches this year just to get us ready to be here in the finals To come in as the third seed and make it to the finals, I'm really happy with that and very proud of the team. To us it was a good season, we didn't quite reach all our goals, but it was a good season."
Bucknell is scheduled to end its 2006 campaign on Tuesday afternoon at 2, while hosting Delaware on the Bucknell tennis courts in Lewisburg.
