LEWISBURG, Pa. - About seven hours after finishing up a 14-5 victory over American, the Bucknell women's lacrosse team finally knows its playoff fate. After a three-team random draw needed to determine the final two Patriot League Tournament spots, the Bison will be the No. 4 seed and play host Holy Cross next Saturday in Worcester, Mass.
Bucknell's win over American on Saturday afternoon left both teams in a tie for third place with 3-3 Patriot League records. Lafayette joined them at 3-3 with a thrilling 14-13 win over Lehigh on Saturday night. None of the Patriot League tiebreakers could settle the three-way tie between Bucknell, American and Lafayette, so the random draw was needed to round out the four-team tournament field.
American drew the No. 3 spot and Bucknell No. 4, meaning Lafayette will be left out of the tournament. American will play No. 2 Colgate in the other first-round game.
The news that Bucknell's season will continue was certainly a relief to head coach Jess Spadafora, whose team is peaking just in time for the postseason and could be a dangerous first-round opponent. The Bison are 7-9 overall but have won five straight games by a combined margin of 72-22.
Holy Cross defeated Bucknell 16-8 in Worcester back on March 19, when the Bison concluded a Spring Break trip that had also taken them to California.
Game times for the Patriot League Tournament have not yet been announced.
