LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite wet conditions at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, Bucknell looked sharp on both sides of the ball in Saturday night's hard-hitting Orange vs. Blue spring football game. The game was contested between the Bucknell offense (Orange) and defense (Blue), with a special scoring system in place that awarded points to both sides.
The offense tallied six touchdowns, including four from fullback Kevin Mullen (Export, Pa./Penn-Trafford), as well as two 42-yard field goals from kicker Will Carney (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional). The Orange squad could accrue points for touchdowns, field goals and PATs, as well as two points for a first down.
There were no kickoffs in the game, and the offensive possessions began at various spots on the field, including a handful of series that started at the Blue 20-yard line that they were able to convert into points. The offense made 24 first downs and finished the night with 94 points.
While the offense moved the ball well for much of the night, the defense also had a number of big plays. The Blue squad was able to force three fumbles, worth six points each. Linebacker Julius Hopson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), linebacker James Streapy (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) and defensive lineman Kurt Schneider (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) all pounced on fumbles.
Cornerback Devon Lutz (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East), cornerback David Frisbey (Newark, Del./Charter School), linebacker Matt Palermo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and defensive lineman Sam Williams (Orlando, Fla./Maynard Evans) led the way with six tackles each. Defensive back Jay Harper (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) also had a noteworthy game with four tackles, three coming in the Orange team's backfield. All told the defense picked up 46 points.
Mullen was the Orange team's leading rusher with 14 carries for 56 yards and the four touchdowns. Slotback Kadero Watson (Richmond, Va./Monacan) scored two touchdowns, including a 14-yarder to open the scoring.
All three quarterbacks performed well. Newcomer Andrew Lair (Metairie, La./Brother Martin) ran for 49 yards on 10 carries and completed the longest pass of the day, a 14-yard zip to Daniel Zvara (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School). Terrance Wilson (Trenton, N.J./Hamilton West) rushed six times for 21 yards and was 5-for-9 passing for 32 yards, while Ryan Ahern (Palos Heights, Ill./St. Laurence) also saw time under center.
The game marked the end of spring practice, and the Bison will now begin offseason preparations for the Sept. 2 season opener against Duquesne.
