Bucknell Women's Water Polo Falls to Maryland, 6-5, at Southern Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. - Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) scored three goals to lead the Bucknell women's water polo team, but after four straight wins over Maryland this season, the Bison fell to the Terrapins, 6-5, in the first round of the Southern Championships Saturday. Second-seeded Bucknell will face fourth-seeded George Washington for third place Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The Colonials lost to top-seeded Princeton Saturday morning.
The Bison (21-7), who owned an 11-0 all-time record against Maryland entering Saturday's game, including 4-0 this year, fell behind 4-2 in the first quarter and could not recover They closed the gap to 5-4 at halftime, but each team netted just one second-half goal.
Jensen led the way with three goals for Bucknell, which is just two wins shy of equaling the program record of 23. Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) registered the other two goals for the Bison. Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) dished out a team-high two assists to bring her season point total to 90, just three shy of tying Adrienne Schober's program record.
Goalie Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made seven saves to boost her season total to 198. She also recorded two steals. Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) tallied a team-high three steals as Bucknell totaled 11 overall.
The top two teams in the Southern, Western and Northern Championships earn an automatic berth to the Eastern Championship, which will be held next weekend in Providence, R.I. Additionally, two other teams earn at-large berths. The Bison are in position to claim one of those at-large positions.
Bucknell and George Washington will square off tonight at 7 p.m. for third place. The Bison have beaten the Colonials in all three meetings this year.
