PRINCETON, N.J. - Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored four goals and one assist to lead the Bucknell women's water polo team to a third-place showing at the Southern Championships Saturday evening as it defeated fourth-seeded George Washington. Gins equaled the Bison single-season goals record of 66 and broke the points record as she now has 95 this season. Earlier in the day, second-seeded Bucknell lost to third-seeded Maryland 6-5.
Gins, who tied Meg Blitzer for tops on the single-season goals list and passed Adrienne Schober's points record of 93, led the Bison offense that tallied 10 goals for the 14th time this season. Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), who scored three goals earlier in the day against the Terrapins, added three more against the Colonials, while Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) registered a pair of goals. Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy) added one goal and one assist.
Bucknell jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, and 5-2 at halftime. After outscoring George Washington 4-1 in the third quarter, the Bison held a 9-3 lead and cruised to their seven-goal victory. Bucknell, which is one win shy of equaling the program record of 23, improved to 4-0 against the Colonials this season.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made six saves and allowed three goals while playing the first three quarters. She now has 204 saves this season. Rachel McGillis (Los Altos, Calif./Lost Altos) relieved her and stopped two shots to lead to a scoreless fourth quarter.
Bucknell equaled its season high with 20 steals in the game, paced by a career-high six from Nogic. That figure equaled the most by a Bison player this year.
Maryland faced top seed and host Princeton Saturday night for the Southern Championships title.
The top two teams in the Southern, Western and Northern Championships earn an automatic berth to the Eastern Championship, which will be held next weekend in Providence, R.I. Additionally, two other teams earn at-large berths. The Bison are in position to claim one of those at-large positions, which are scheduled to be announced Sunday afternoon.
