Bucknell Track and Field Brave the Rain and Sweep Five Way

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The weather was cold and rainy, but both the Bison women's and men's track and field teams persevered and pulled off victories at the first outdoor scoring meet of the season, the Bucknell Five Way, on Saturday, April 22, at the Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa. The women won by 164.5 points, while the men secured their victory by 51, both defeating Saint Franics (Pa.), Duquesne, Lock Haven and Binghamton.
Junior Chessa Forer (New York, N.Y./Deerfield Acad.) won the 100-meter dash for the women, clocking in a time of 12.72 seconds, while also taking second in the 200, with a mark of 26.40. Taking first in the 100-hurdles and the 400 hurdles was junior Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), clocking in times of 14.90 and 1:04.38, respectively.
The Orange and Blue swept the women's 3000 steeplechase with junior Christy Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Perkasie), junior Rebecca Pierotti (Hazleton, Pa./Bishop Hafey) and freshman Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) finishing first, second and third, respectively. Totten's time of 11:25.50 earned her a third-place finish on the top-10 list, while Peirotti's mark of 11:27.40 puts her fourth on the list and Falcaro's mark of 11:38.50 ranks her eighth.
Senior Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) won the 5000 with a time of 17:51.33, while Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) won the 800 with a mark of 2:11.20.
Junior Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y./Northport) took first in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 6 1/4 inches, while juniors Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) took first in the pole vault (11-11 3/4) and the hammer (178-10), respectively. Also on the field, junior Ann Doty (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) took first in the triple jump (37-3 1/4), while sophomore Nicole Ayala (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) took second in the event. Ayala also placed second in the long jump (16-8 1/2), while freshman Katie Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) took second in the high jump (4-11).

Grap also took second in the discus with a mark of 139-10, while sophomore Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) took second in the 1500 with a time of 4:41.16.
The women swept the relay categories, with Buczko, Trentacoste, Forer and sophomore Lesley Emons (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) on the 4x100 team, Trentacoste, Sawko, junior Kat Allen (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) and freshman Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagra Wheatfield) on the 4x400 team, and Cranmer-Hart, sophomore Offerbea Hanson-Hall (New Rochell, N.Y./New Rochelle), junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) and freshman Gillian Nordquist (Clarksown, Mich.,/Clarkstown) on the 4x800 team.
"The conditions were terrible, but I was very proud of how our ladies handled the weather," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We really showed great depth in all of the event areas and if the weather is this bad at Patriot Leagues, we'll be ready."
On the men's side, senior Ryan Whitfield (LaGrange, Ga./LaGrange) won the 400 hurdles with a mark of 57.24, while freshman Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) came in second with a time of 58.48.
In the 110 hurdles, junior John MacFeeters (Haddon Field, N.J./Large) finished in 15.50 to win the event, while classmate Samuel Andrews (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Acad.) finished second (15.53).
Also winning events were senior Dan Frake (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore Eric Weaver (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area). Frake won both the shot put with a heave of 50-8 1/4 and the hammer, 172-4, while Weaver took the title in the javelin with a mark of 145-5.
Senior Matt Corbetta (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) finished in second in the 200 with a time of 22.63, while Boyle finished the 400 with a mark of 48.87.
In the 3000 steeplechase, sophomore Andrew Corral (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) finished in second place, clocking in a time of 9:34.20, while junior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) finished second in the 1500 (3:57.40), with senior Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) finishing third in the 5000 (15:13.12).
Sophomore David Mante (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) continued to enjoy success in the pole vault with a leap of 14-7 1/4, good enough for second place. Also in the field, sophomore James Meyer (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Pacific Palisades) finished in third in the discus with a heave of 139-8. Freshman Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) fell into second place in the high jump with a mark of 6-2 3/4, while senior Thomas Bennett (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) landed in second in the triple jump (43-3).
"It was a good win on the men's side," said Donner. "This momentum will help carry us through the last few weeks of the season. I was also very proud of our men for competing hard in adverse conditions."
The "Five-Way" was the last home outdoor meet of the 2006 season and was used to honor the senior class.
The Orange and Blue will return to action on Thursday, April 27 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
