LEWISBURG, Pa. - Six Bison pitchers held Temple to just one run and four hits in nine innings as the Bucknell baseball team rolled to a 6-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Depew Field. The Orange and Blue improve to 17-19 with the win, while the Owls drop to 7-28.
In the first inning, the Bison took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single by senior Matt Capece (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) that brought in classmate Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) who was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and stole second. Then in the third, Duvall led off with an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas).
Bucknell broke the game open with a three-run fifth. Freshman Zachary Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) started things off with an infield single and with one out, Capece singled to centerfield. The next batter, senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area), plated Brown with a sacrifice fly. Then Gryskevicz drove in Capece with a single down the left field line and sophomore Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) brought home Gryskevicz with a single through the left side for the final run of the inning.
The Orange and Blue later increased the lead to 6-0 when sophomore Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) singled up the middle and came around to score on a single by Walter.
Temple took one of the runs back in the ninth as Devon Swope singled and was forced in with a bases-loaded walk to Frank Nunan. That would be all the Owls would manage off the Bison, however. Buursma retired the next two Temple batters in order and recorded his fifth save of the season, pitching two-thirds of an inning with no runs, no hits, no walks and one strikeout.
Freshman Andy Campbell (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings of work with no walks and two strikeouts to earn the victory (3-1) for Bucknell, while Eric Fritz (0-2) suffered the loss for Temple. He pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Nine different Bison batters recorded at least one hit in the contest, including senior Jacob Moss (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) who singled to left in a pinch hit appearance, going 1-for-1. Walter was 2-for-3 in the contest with two RBI, Capece hit 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Gryskevicz batted 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Rubbo finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Bucknell continues its homestand with four games this Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, against Patriot League foe Holy Cross, with each doubleheader beginning at noon at Depew Field.
