LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell has claimed the Patriot League's first two men's lacrosse rookies of the week in freshmen attackmen John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) and Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial).
Togneri was the league's first rookie of the week recipient of 2006 after collecting two goals and an assist in a season-opening 10-8 loss to Hobart on Feb. 25. Through three games Togneri is Bucknell's leading scorer with nine points, coming on five goals and four assists.
Mele exploded for five goals - the most by a Bucknell player so far this season - in a 16-9 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 28 in the team's home opener. He scored three times in succession to snap a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, sending the Bison on their way to a big lead. Mele also scored twice on Saturday against Butler, and he leads the squad with eight goals on the season.
The Bison are 1-2 on the season and now travel to San Diego for a date with fourth-ranked Navy on Saturday night in The First 4 showcase at USD's Torero Stadium. The 10:30 p.m. (EST) game will be aired live on College Sports Television (CSTV).
