LEWISBURG, Pa. - Emily Burman had two goals and two assists and was one of 10 different goal scorers for Bucknell in an entertaining 14-12 victory over Davidson on Saturday at chilly Graham Field. With the win the Bison improve to 2-0 on the season heading into Tuesday's home contest with nationally ranked Penn State.
Colleen Evans, Sarah Collins and Bonnie Buechel - all freshmen - scored two goals each for the Bison, who trailed for most of the contest despite dominating time of possession. Bucknell outshot Davidson (1-1) 40-16, but the Wildcats scored on 12 of those shots against Bison backup goalie Kristin Gaines.
Davidson was led by Eloise Grose and Emily Palmer, who scored three goals apiece. Callie Seymour had two goals and two assists, and Kiften Stephens logged a goal and three assists.
The Bison never led until Lauren Kremer's unassisted tally capped a three-goal run with 14:41 to play. Five times in the game Bucknell reduced a two goal lead to one, but they never got over the hump until Tory Field, Elizabeth Whipple and Kremer all scored in a five-minute span to make it 10-9.
Emily Palmer tied the game at 10 with 13:28 to play, but Bucknell went back ahead on Erin Weinstein's free-position shot with 11:11 remaining. It was Bucknell's only goal in eight tries from eight meters, but again the Wildcats drew even on Grose's tally with 9:38 left.
With 7:40 left Collins beat a defender and ripped a hard right-handed shot past goalie Leslie Smith, and this time the Bison made the lead hold up. Burman gave them some much-needed insurance when she finished a Kremer feed with 3:39 left to make it 13-11, and with Davidson forced to double team the ball in the final minute Collins raced to the goal and finished for a 14-11 lead with 39 seconds left. Grose added one to the Davidson tally with 11 seconds left, but the Bison won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock.
Bucknell's ability to force turnovers was a key. Davidson had 21 miscues to Bucknell's 11, and the Wildcats were successful on only eight of 17 clearing attempts. The Bison won the ground ball battle 20-19.
Smith made 11 of her 13 saves in the first half for Davidson. Gaines, making her first career start, was credited with three saves, including a big one with just over two minutes left and the Bison leading 13-11.
Bucknell and Penn State meet Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Graham Field. The game is a makeup date from last Thursday's date that was postponed due to inclement weather.
