Bucknell Indoor Track & Field to Compete at ECAC/IC4A Championships

2006 IC4A Championships - Schedule
The indoor track and field squads will be taking 20 athletes to represent the Orange and Blue at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, held in Boston, Mass., on March 4-5. In order to participate in the Championships, each of the 20 athletes had to meet qualifying criteria. 11 women will be competing in 10 events at the ECAC's, while nine men will battle in nine events for the Bison at the IC4A's.
At the first meet of the season (Bison Opener, Dec. 3, 2005), junior Marjorie Grap (Van Etten/Spencer-Van Etten) qualified in the weight throw with a heave of 58 feet, 9 1/4 inches, while classmate Melanie Buczko marked a leap of 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault and also earned a spot at the ECAC's. The original qualifying marks also serve as each athlete's lowest mark of the season. Later in the season, Grap set a new school record with a heave of 64-9 1/4 (Feb. 4, 2006), while Buczko set a season-high with a leap of 13-3 1/2 (Jan. 21, 2006).
Junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) will be Bucknell's most active participant in the Championships, as she will compete in the 800-meters, the 1000, the distance medley relay (DMR) and the 4x800 relay. Sawko earned a spot in the 800 at the Penn State National Invite (Jan. 27-28) with a time of 2 minutes, 12.05 seconds, while earning a spot in the 1000 at the Bucknell Heptagonal (Jan. 21), with a time of 2:57.30. At the Patriot League Championships (Feb. 17-19), Sawko set a new school record in the 1000 (2:53.90).
The DMR team, also comprised of juniors Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and sophomore Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) finished in 11:56.00 at the PSU Invite to earn a place at the Championships. Along with Sawko, the 4x800 team of Bricker and sophomores Victoria Gilbert (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and Offeibea Hanson-Hall (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) qualified with a mark of 9:04.95 (PL Championships).
Bricker also set a qualifying time of 2:25.38 in the 1000 (PSU Invite), while Cranmer-Hart secured a spot in the mile (4:59.18, Akron Open, Feb. 4).
At the Bucknell Winter Classic (Feb. 11), Trentacoste earned a place in the 55 hurdles (8.27), while junior Ann Doty (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) qualified in the triple jump (38-6 3/4).
Junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) will compete in the mile (4:58.74, Akron Open), while senior Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) will run the 5000 (17:29.83, PSU Invite).
On the men's side, junior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) will be competing in the weight throw. Hoffman hit the mark at the Bison Opener (55-11) but, as the season progressed, went on to record a personal best throw of 60-3 1/4 (Winter Classic).

Sophomore Wallace Campbell set the time in the mile (4:14.16) at the Bucknell Heptagonal, while also qualifying in the 3000 (8:21.61), at the PSU Invite.
Freshman Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) earned a place in not only the 400 with a school record-breaking time of 48.42 (Akron Open), but also in the 500 with a mark of 1:04.26 (PSU Invite).
In the 5000, the Bison will be represented by junior Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell), who clocked in a qualifying time of 14:47.07 at the Akron Open.
Both senior Kevin Brown (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and junior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) qualified in the 1000 at the PSU Invite with times of 2:28.49 and 2:28.29, respectively.
The DMR team, of Caroleo, Brown, Campbell and senior Matt Corbetta (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester), earned its place in 10:08.91 at the Black Squirrel Invitational (Jan. 14), while the 4x400 team of Corbetta, Boyle, junior Matt Bonelli (Califon, N.J./Pingry School) and freshman Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) earned its place at the Winter Classic (3:19.62).
The ECAC Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and conclude at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, following the Awards Ceremony. The IC4A Championships, held at Boston University, will begin at 10 on Saturday morning and conclude around 3 p.m. on Sunday.
