FRESNO, Calif. - The Bucknell baseball team fought to overcome an early 7-0 deficit, but came up short, dropping a 10-5 decision to Binghamton in the squads' final game of the Fresno State Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Bison fall to 5-9, while the victory moves the Bearcats to 3-4-1.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the second when Kyle Klee drove in Aaron Davis with a single to centerfield then the team added six more runs in the third with five hits, including two doubles, to jump in front 7-0.
Bucknell battled back with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Bison got on the board with an RBI double by junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) that plated senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa/Mifflinburg Area). Then senior Chris Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) tripled to lead off the fifth inning and came home on an infield single by senior Matt Capece (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic). Capece scored the third run for the Orange and Blue on a wild pitch after stealing second and advancing to third on a balk.
In the top of the sixth, the Bearcatts took one of the runs back as Micael Quinn began the inning with a single and came around to score on an error. However, the Bison would not quit, cutting their deficit to three in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) roped a single to left that plated Gryskevicz and sophomore Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School), but Binghamton responded by scoring a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Davis and plating another in the eighth as Justin Smucker came home on an error.
Junior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) started for Bucknell and took the loss (0-4) as he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Binghamton starter Seth Rademacker threw five innings and allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts on his way to the victory (1-0). Mike Van Gorder relieved him and allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work to pick up a save.
Gryskevicz was the lone member of the Orange and Blue to register a multiple-hit night as he went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Davis hit 3-for-5 for the Bearcats with two runs scored and three RBI and Klee was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.
The Bison next travel to Penn State for a single game on Wednesday, March 22, at 3 p.m.
