Bucknell Women's Water Polo Opens Claremont Convergence with 7-5 Win Over Occidental

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bucknell women's water polo team opened play at the 10th annual Claremont Convergence Saturday with a 7-5 victory over Occidental, the fourth-ranked team at the Division III level. The Bison were led by two goals and two assists from Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and 10 saves from goalie Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland).
Gins, who stands 11th on Bucknell's all-time scoring list, now has 117 career points with her four-point performance. Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) matched her with two goals against Occidental. Laura Stalker (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary), Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) rounded out the scoring for the Bison with single goals apiece.
Bynum, who tied with Gins with a team-high two assists, stopped 10 shots in goal to increase her season total to 113. She has now saved 53.1 percent of the shots she has faced this season.
The game was close throughout as the final two-goal margin matched the largest Bucknell led by at the end of any quarter.
Bucknell, which improved the 14-5 to match the fifth-best win total in program history, was an efficient 2-for-3 in six-on-five opportunities.
The Bison play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday evening at 8:15 p.m. Eastern in their second game of the day. The Claremont Convergence concludes with two more games Sunday.
