FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno native Jacob Moss (San Joaquin Memorial) pitched seven solid innings and struck out five to help lead the Bucknell baseball team to a 9-5 victory over Miami-Ohio at Fresno State's Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Wednesday. The win improves the Bison's record to 4-6 while the RedHawks fall to 4-8.
Miami was able to put the first run of the game on the board in the second when Jon Franzese knocked a leadoff double and came around to score on a single to left by Evan Armitage. Then the RedHawks loaded the bases with two out in the inning, but Moss fanned Ryne Robinson to work out of the jam.
In the bottom half of the inning, Bucknell came alive at the plate, scoring five runs on four hits. Sophomore Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) tied the score at one, picking up his first career RBI with a bases loaded walk that plated classmate Jason Buursma (Seattle Wash./Lakeside School) who began the second with a single. Sophomore Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) followed by driving in senior Chris Brannan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) with a single up the middle. Then senior Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) brought in Angelo with an RBI groundout and Hirsch completed the scoring in the inning, coming home on a single by junior Dustin Kapson (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman).
The Bison added a sixth run in the third when Angelo plated Buursma for the second time in the game after Buursma led off with a single. Senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) later made it 7-1 in favor of the Orange and Blue with a leadoff homer to left in the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Miami took a run back with a home run by Franzese to left on a 3-2 count. The RedHawks proceeded to once again load the bases for Robinson with two out, but Moss escaped further damage in the inning by getting him to ground out to second.
Bucknell answered by stretching its lead back to six by picking up the team's eighth run of the contest with an RBI single by Duvall in the bottom of the sixth to plate Hirsch who reached with his second hit of the day.
Miami then cut its deficit to three by scoring three with two out in the eighth, but the offense would not be enough to lift the RedHawks as the Bison scored their ninth run of the contest in the bottom of the inning on sacrifice fly by Kapson that scored senior Chris Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg).
Hirsch went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, Angelo was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI, Burrsma hit 2-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored and Duvall was 2-for-5 with two RBI, to round out Bucknell's offensive leaders. For Miami, Brandon Hillier went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Franzese hit 2-for-5 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored.
Moss allowed two runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work to record the win (2-0). Sophomore Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) relieved him and pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed three unearned runs on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Buursma tossed 1.1 hitless innings and struck out two to pick up his first save of the season.
Jeff Day started for the RedHawks and suffered the loss (1-2). He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Matt Erwood worked 2.2 innings in relief and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Bucknell will play its second game of the day at 4 p.m., Eastern, when the Bison will take on Gonzaga at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
