MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Playing its first outdoor dual match of the 2006 spring season, the Bucknell women's tennis team fought hard against the wind and the College of Charleston, but fell 6-1 in the spring break opening match in South Carolina on Tuesday, March 14, at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant.
The No. 1 and 2 doubles positions were tight battles, as College of Charleston caught a few breaks and were able to upset the Bison. In the No. 1 spot, freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) fell 8-5 to Chelsea Albertz and Payten Ellington, while freshman Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) fell in the No. 2, 9-7.
In singles play, freshman JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) conquered the weather conditions and picked up the lone Orange and Blue point of the match by defeating Kelsey Darnell in the No. 6 position, 6-4, 6-2.
In the No. 1 spot, Brown also played a tough match against Albertz, but just could not catch a break as she fell 6-4, 6-2.
The women will look for their first spring break win as they battle Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C. on March 15. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
