Bucknell Tennis to Compete at West Branch Racquet Club

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both of Bucknell's tennis teams will be traveling to the West Branch Racquet Club, in Williamsport, Pa., where they will be hosting Quinnipiac in the first dual matches of the 2006 season, scheduled to begin at noon. The men are opening their spring season, while the women began theirs' on Jan. 27, at the Cornell Invite, in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Bison men return senior captain Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who compiled a fall 2005 singles record of five wins, four losses. Juniors Matt Pikus (Medford, N.J./Lenape) and Brian Cohen (Potomac, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) also return for the Orange and Blue, after compiling fall records of 4-3 and 5-2, respectively.
Sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day) will also start his spring season tomorrow, as he led the Bison in 2005 with a singles record of 14-9.
Sophomore John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely), along with newcomers Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic), Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) should also make an impact at Saturday's dual match.
On the women's side, senior co-captains Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) will look to lead their team to its first dual-match victory of 2006. Both Brown and Mills currently rank among Bucknell's career top-20 list in best singles, doubles and overall records, in the Bison women's record books.
Newcomer Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) should be a major contributor on Saturday, along with sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and freshmen Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park).
Prior to the matches, several team members will travel to the Racquet Club to assist with junior clinics, starting at 11 a.m. Following the clinics, all participants will get a chance to watch Bucknell tennis in action and stay for raffle drawings and prizes.
The next time the Bison men will be in action is on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Penn State at 6:30 p.m., while both teams will be playing a dual match at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 18.
