LEWISBURG, Pa. - This past Saturday the Bucknell women's rowing program held the annual Erg Armageddon inside Davis Gym. The event, which comes just three weeks prior to Bucknell's spring training trip to Elberton, Ga., featured more than 220 competitors from 10 different schools, the largest-ever figures for the Erg Armageddon.
In its 10th year, the Erg Armageddon featured competition in a number of events including men's and women's varsity lightweight and openweight two-kilometer races, along with men's and women's master's races and 500-meter sprints. Additionally, there was a one-kilometer race for coxswains and varsity mixed doubles events. During racing, competitors and spectators were able to follow along by watching a large screen on the wall of Davis Gym that simulated the race.
Penn State, Binghamton, RIT, St. Augustine Prep, Susquehanna and Franklin & Marshall were the teams that competed Saturday, along with a host of unaffiliated rowers. Competition began on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the master's races, which were designed for adult rowers at least 27 years old.
Bucknell rowers, who all competed as unaffiliated athletes, won four events. Whittney Henry, Erin Henry, Page Kannor and Kelly Henkler were the four Bison to post victories. Whittney Henry won the novice lightweight in 7 minutes, 54.5 seconds, while Erin Henry claimed the varsity lightweight in 7:51.8. Kannor posted a time of 7:25.8 in the novice openweight and Henkler won the novice 500-meter dash in 1:42.8. Overall, Bucknell won four gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes as many Bison posted new personal 2,000-meter records.
Bucknell opens its 2006 spring season with its spring training trip March 11-18. The Bison will compete at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa., March 25, marking the first time they will be in the Northeast this spring.
