PRINCETON, N.J. - After trailing 5-2 at halftime, the Bucknell women's water polo team stormed back to force overtime and eventually won in the extra period by an 11-9 score over Brown Saturday night at DeNunzio Pool as part of the Princeton Invitational. The win improved the Bison's record to 5-1, including 5-0 against unranked foes.
Bucknell defeated Wagner earlier in the day, giving them a 2-1 record at the Princeton Invitational with a game to play against Marist Sunday morning.
Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) registered three goals in the game, including the game-winner in the second overtime period. She also dished out one assist. However, Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored a team-high four goals to go along with one assist.
Rowe, who leads the team with 22 goals this season, tallied 10 goals in the two games Saturday. Gins, who is second on the team in scoring with 18 goals, totaled six goals Saturday.
The Bison fell behind early as they only managed two goals in the first 14 minutes of play, but stormed back with four goals in the third period to draw to within one. Gins scored the eventual game-winning goal in a six-on-five situation, and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tacked on an insurance tally for a late two-goal cushion.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made eight saves in goal, falling one shy of her season-high figure.
In the two games Saturday, Bucknell excelled in sprints. The Bison, who won all four earlier in the day against Wagner, won all six opposite Brown. Bucknell has won 20 of 26 sprints this season.
Bucknell wraps up the weekend with a game against Marist at 10:05 a.m. Sunday.
