COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) equaled her career high with six goals to lead the Bucknell women's water polo team past host Maryland, 9-6, in its first game on Sunday morning at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational. Freshman Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the way in the second game, a 17-6 win over Cal State East Bay in the first-ever meeting between the two teams, with five goals and five assists to tie a pair of school records.
The Bison improved to 3-0 for the first time in program history with the two victories.
Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) helped Gins, who is second on the team with nine goals through three games, out on the offensive end with four assists and one goal against Maryland. The six goals Gins scored equaled the second-highest single-game figure in program history. Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tallied one goal and two assists, while Rowe, who tallied a team-high 11 points in the two games Sunday, rounded out the list of Bison scorers.
Bucknell had a strong defensive showing as well with Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) making nine saves to go along with 12 steals from the defensive players in front of her. Nogic led the way with three steals, while Rowe, Jensen and Gins each added two.
A strong first half catapulted the Bison to victory as they led 5-1 at halftime. Maryland crawled back into the game, drawing to within one goal in the fourth quarter, but Bucknell held off the rally. However, the Bison were just 3-for-9 in extra-man opportunities.
Eight different Bison scored in the second game of the day, the 17-6 victory over Cal State Easy Bay, with Rowe pacing the list. She tied the Bucknell record for points (10) and assists (5) in a game. Julie McLaughlin is the only other Bucknell player to reach 10 points, registering six goals and four assists opposite Villanova in 2001. Meredith Stevens and Adrienne Schober, the second-leading scorer in Bison history, each were credited with five assists in 2000.
Freshman Aubrey Rowe equaled Bucknell single-game records in points (10) and assists (5) in the Bison's 17-6 win over Cal State East Bay. |
Despite not scoring a goal in the nightcap, Gins dished out three assists.
Bucknell jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Cal State East Bay outscored the Bison 4-3 in the second quarter to draw to within 7-5 at halftime. Bynum relieved starter Katie Colgan (Annapolis, Md./Saint Mary's) in the second half and allowed just one goal the rest of the way while making a pair of saves. Colgan stopped two three shots in the first half.
A 6-0 fourth quarter helped cement the Bucknell victory.
In between the Maryland and Cal State East Bay games, Bucknell's "B" team did play an exhibition contest against Maryland's "B" squad and won 9-4. Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the Bison with two goals and three assists in that contest.
Bucknell is idle until next weekend when it travels to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Invitational where it will face Indiana, Brown, Wagner and Marist over a three-day span.
