WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Bucknell men's tennis team turned in a 6-1 dual-match victory, in its first bit of action in 2006, over Quinnipiac. The women were not as successful as they fell 6-1.
For the men, sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country-Day) was victorious in the number one singles position over Andrew Chan, 6-4, 6-1 and also won in the doubles No. 1 spot with partner Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), 8-4. Salam, the Orange and Blue's number two, was victorious in his singles match over Mike Racioppo, 6-3, 6-4.
Also going undefeated on the day in singles were sophomore John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely), junior Matt Pikus (Medford, N.J./Lenape) and freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon), who won their matches in the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
Sandburg, paired up with Lashnits, won his doubles match in the No. 2 position, 8-4, while the pair of freshmen Dan Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Jonathan Brenner won 8-2 in the No. 3 slot.
The women had a rough day as only freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) was victorious and defeated Jackie Herb, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, in the No. 3 singles position.
Senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) played a tight match against Tina Hoang in the No. 2 position, but fell 6-7, 7-5, 10-5.
In doubles play, the pair of Gamboa and senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) played strong, but fell short of a victory and lost 8-6.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, in a dual-match against St. Bonaventure, in Olean, N.Y., at noon.
