BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Eric Lapotsky (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel Area) posted a 4-0 record in his bouts with three pins as the Bucknell wrestling squad went 1-3 at the Hoosier Duals on Saturday in Indiana's Assembly Hall. The Bison defeated Appalachian State, 32-12, but fell to Oregon, Ohio and Indiana, leaving the Orange and Blue with a 3-5 duals record on the season.
Bucknell closed out the meet on a high note with its victory over the Mountaineers. Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) started things off with an 18-7 major decision over Brody Essick at 125 to put the Bison up, 4-0. Terreyl Williams then brought Appalachian State within a point at 4-3 as the 133-pounder defeated David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Area), 9-4. However, four straight wins by the Orange and Blue stretched the advantage to 22-3. Zach Galligan (Boonville, N.Y./Adirondack) pinned Corey Hulsey 4:27 into his bout at 141, Michael Guttilla (Ingamer, Pa./Blair Academy) came away with a 12-9 victory at 149 over Zach Martin, Brantley Hooks (Spartansburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) won by forfeit at 157 and Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) downed Tommy Hutchison, 6-1 at 165.
With two bouts remaining, the Mountaineers were within 10 points at 22-12, but Lapotsky iced the victory for the Bison by pinning Brandon Brothers in 1:33 into the 197-pound contest.
The first dual of the day was hard fought with neither side able to pull away, but Oregon (4-2) eventually edged Bucknell, 23-19. The Ducks took a 3-0 lead with a 13-6 victory for Ryan Dunn at 125 over Hart and the Orange and Blue promptly erased the deficit with a 22-6 win by technical fall in the 133-pound bout between Marble and Joey Lucas. Oregon then climbed back out in front, 6-5, with a 10-4 decision for Justin Pearch over Galligan at 141.
With major decisions wins posted by Guttilla and Hooks in the next two bouts, Bucknell found itself back on top, 13-6. Guttilla defeated Zach Frazier, 18-5, at 149 and Hooks downed Brian Cantrell, 13-2, at 157.
However, the Ducks responded with back-to-back wins at 165 and 174. In the 165-pound matchup between Rendos and Kyle Bounds, Bounds edged Rendos, 7-6, handing him his first loss of the season. Ron Lee then gave Oregon a 14-13 lead after winning by technical fall over Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) at 174 by the score of 22-6.
The Bison eventually reclaimed the advantage, 19-17, after Lapotsky pinned Chris Robertson in 34 seconds in the 197 matchup, but the Ducks escaped with the victory after Chris Dearmon pinned George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) 2:53 into the final bout.
Against the Bobcats, Hooks, Rendos and Lapotsky picked up wins, but Bucknell fell to Ohio, 26-13. Hooks was victorious his bout at 157 by a 7-2 margin over Dan Fladda. Rendos came away with a major decision, 15-2, over Ryan Knapp at 165 and Lapotsky pinned Larry Reichard in 2:24 at 197.
Lapotsky also posted the only Bison points in the team's 44-3 setback against Indiana, who is ranked 18th nationally in the latest W.I.N. Magazine top-25 poll, defeating Justin Curran by the score of 6-3 in the 197-pound bout.
Bucknell returns to action at home next Saturday, Dec. 2, when the Orange and Blue will take on to take on Binghamton and Princeton in Davis Gym beginning at 5 p.m.
