NEW YORK, N.Y. - Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) scored six consecutive points to start a late 21-7 run as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Columbia 71-53 Tuesday evening at Levien Gym. Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) led the Bison with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the young season.
Leading just 50-46 with eight minutes left in the game, Brown went on a scoring frenzy, knocking down a pair of jumpers and then coming up with one of her career high-tying five steals that led to a fast break layup to put Bucknell (2-1) up 56-46, its largest lead of the contest at that juncture. Foster helped make the run extend to 10-0 by tallying the next four points.
The Bison defense, which limited the Lions to a season-low 34.5 percent shooting from the field, cracked down in the final four minutes as Columbia (1-2) made just one of its final six field goal attempts.
A jumper by Ashley Branch (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College HS), who was seeing her first game action of 2006-07, in the closing seconds extended the lead out to the final 18-point margin, which was the largest of the game.
Foster, who is averaging 20.0 points per game this season, helped Bucknell get started early as she tallied 11 of her points in the first 10 minutes of play. She ended up with 15 points in the first half. Despite picking up four fouls Foster was able to block a game-high four shots as she increased her season total to 17 in just three games.
Bucknell blistered the nets, making 52.7 percent (29 of 55) of its field goals. Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain), who moved into a tie for 11th place on the Bison career scoring list with 13 points Tuesday, Brown and Foster combined to make 21 of 33 from the field, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range.
Every player on the active Bucknell roster played in the game and scored as each of the five players off the bench tallied two points, including Ashton Sprouse (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter), who played a season-high 22 minutes and equaled her career high with six rebounds.
One negative for the Bison were their 23 turnovers, however, six of those came on consecutive possessions mid-way through the first half and during that time Columbia was only able to knock four points off the Bison lead.
The strong Bucknell defense that forced 18 turnovers, including 11 in the first half, did not allow a single Lion to net double figures as Danielle Browne and Megan Griffith each registered a game-high nine points. Chelsea Frazier pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Bucknell will wrap up its three-game road trip Friday at No. 17 Michigan State. Tip off for the contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
