Bison Women's Tennis Continues Competition At The Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa - Led by Paulina Gamboa (Mexico, City/Mexico), Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Renee Weissend (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), who each notched second- and third-round singles victories, the Bucknell women's tennis team had a strong showing on day two of the Bucknell Invitational Saturday at the Bucknell Tennis Courts, collecting a combined 10 victories.
Gamboa took down Amanda Petruzzi of Quinnipiac and Joy Adewumi of UMBC in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-3, respectively, in Flight Three. Varela continued her strong play in Flight One by notching straight-set victories over Cornelia Carapcea of UMBC, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round, and Connecticut's Christine Burek 7-5, 6-1, in the third round. Weissend earned Flight Seven victories over Quinnipiac's Nikki Adams, 6-4, 7-5, in the second round and Alison Koch of Connecticut, 6-4, 6-3, in the third. Freshmen Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale Central) and Kirstyn Sotak (Beechwood, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) notched third-round victories over Quinnipiac's Kasey Rosenberger and Danielle Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0, and 7-6(6), 6-2, respectively.
In doubles action, Gamboa and Calcaterra dropped Joy Adewumi and Barbara Couto of Quinnipiac 8-2 in Flight Two, while the duo of Weissend and Sotak defeated Jessica Porter and Alison Campitiello of Connecticut, 8-4, in Flight Three.
Bucknell will compete in the final day of competition of the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Bucknell Tennis Courts. Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
