WASHINGTON, D.C. - Playing in an unfamiliar shallow-deep pool, the Bucknell men's water polo team was nipped by George Washington, 7-6, Saturday evening. The loss dropped the Bison, who fell to No. 10 Navy 10-5 earlier in the day, to 12-9 this season and 3-4 in league play.
The Colonials, who had dropped seven consecutive games to Bucknell, including a 13-8 decision last month at Kinney Natatorium, used a four-goal second quarter to take a 5-3 halftime lead. However, the Bison tallied three goals in the third quarter to even the score at 6-6. George Washington netted the lone goal in the fourth to hold on for the victory. It was the first loss to an unranked opponent for Bucknell this season.
Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) led the Bison offense with two goals and three assists as he equaled his career-high of 48 goals and surpassed his career high with his 72nd point this season.
Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) netted two goals apiece to round out the Bucknell attack. Rechel also contributed three steals.
After equaling his career high with 11 saves against Navy earlier in the day, Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) added five opposite George Washington. He now has 130 stops this year.
The Bison wrap up their regular season with a single game at Princeton on Tuesday, Oct. 17. The contest is set for 8 p.m.
