LEWISBURG, Pa. -- J.R. Holden, a 1998 Bucknell graduate and the No. 11 scorer in Bison basketball history, stood out on an international stage this week when he led his CSKA Moscow team into ESPN-televised battles against the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers as well as Israeli power Maccabi Tel Aviv as part of the NBA Europe Live Tour.
Also as part of the NBA Europe Live Tour, the San Antonio Spurs, featuring 2006 Bucknell grad and NBA roster hopeful Charles Lee, played two games in France.
Holden, who is now a Russian citizen and has also played for the Russian national team, is entering his fifth season with powerhouse CSKA Moscow. Holden's team has won the Russian Championship in each of his first four seasons there, and CSKA Moskow claimed the prestigious Euroleague title in 2005-06.
On Saturday in Moscow, CSKA Moscow knocked off the Clippers, an NBA playoff team last season, 94-75. Holden played 34 minutes in that contest and had finished with three points and five rebounds.
On Tuesday in Cologne, Germany, Holden had five points and four steals while leading his team to a 90-81 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv.
An in CSKA Moscow's final game of the showcase, Allen Iverson's 28 points led the 76ers to an 85-71 decision in Cologne. Holden finished with 10 points against Philadelphia.
After leaving Bucknell with 1,327 points, two First Team All-Patriot League citations and two team MVP awards, Holden has enjoyed a very successful professional career in Europe. Prior to finding a home with CSKA Moscow, he also played in Latvia, Belgium and Greece. He has led teams to championships at every stop and played in all-star games in Latvia and Greece.
Lee and the Spurs kicked off the NBA Europe Live Tour by defeating Adecco ASVEL 115-90 on Oct. 5 in Lyon, and Maccabi Tel Aviv 97-94 on Oct. 8 in Paris.
Lee, the 2006 Patriot League Player of the Year and Patriot League Tournament MVP, played three minutes against Adecco ASVEL and made his only field goal attempt. He also got into the game against Maccabi Tel Aviv but did not score.
Now back in the U.S., Lee and Spurs will take on the Orlando Magic in an NBA preseason game on Saturday night.
